Lightweight Vacuum Cleaners: More Than Just Hand Vacs

Lightweight Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuuming the house is not a hard job, but sometimes wrangling with a 25 pound sucking monster is about all you can handle. Are the new lightweight vacuum cleaners able to handle cleaning like the old heavyweights? What options are there in vacuums that don't weight a ton?

Vacuum cleaners are often heavy because of the self-propelling motor in the base. Of course, this same motor is needed so you can handle the heavy vacuum. If the motor is not there, the vacuum will be lighter and easier to handle. And it might seem unlikely, but often the suction of the lighter weight vacuums is just as powerful as that of the heavy ones.

Lightweight vacuums include all of the various models of bagless hand vacs, stick vacuums, and electric brooms as well as brands like Oreck, which brags about its 8-pound upright vacuum. Hand vacuum cleaners are very handy to have around in cases of mishaps and spills.

For example, the Dirt Devil MO-100 is the modern equivalent of the original Dirt Devil hand vac. The new model is advertised to provide twice the suction of the original. It also features a five piece tool set and a 20-foot cord.

Dirt Devil also makes a broom vac that comes in a wide array of colors. You can choose pink, purple, silver, several shades of green and yellow, and more. It's been designed for 60 per cent more suction power than the original Broom Vac and is rechargeable via the handy adapter. The dirt cup must be emptied, of course, but it is more efficient than bending over an old fashioned dustpan.

Dirt Devil is well known for its other handheld vacuums, too. One is a designer styled, elegant-looking gadget called the KURV, and is available in Choco-Latte color, as well as Harbor Sky, Champagne, and Spice. It's pretty enough to be left out to be seen, and costs around $55. It even has a three year warranty on parts and motor.

Oreck touts its high suction power along with its light weight. Oreck spends a lot of money on advertising, and some people feel that their products are over-rated and over-priced. Other people love them, and it is true that they are not heavy. You will have to buy bags, however, and you probably won't find them at your local discount store, so that can be a problem.

Eureka makes a lightweight vacuum they call the 96F, which can be bought for around $30. It has a rechargeable battery installed so that it can be used without a cord for quick and easy touch up cleaning. It also converts from a stick-style vac to a hand vac. The brushroll can be turned on and off for safer cleaning on a variety of surfaces.

Eureka also makes other lightweight vacuum cleaners. One is an upright which at 14 pounds, might be considered more of a mid-weight. It's called the 4700A Maxima. It has a larger diameter hose which eliminates a lot of clogs. The cord is only 14 feet long, which could limit its convenience. It costs less than $70, though. It features the same 12 amps of motor power that the big vacuums have.
